Executing The Cast

Keep your cast under 40 feet, a shorter cast makes for a better presentation. Make your back cast with just a quick wrist snap using very little arm movement. Do not drop the rod tip toward the water. The line should go straight and flat behind you approximately 8 to 10 feet above the water. The forward cast is made similar and should straighten out about 6 feet above the surface of the water. When done correctly, the leader should be laying in a series of "S" curves. The leader should not pile up at the fly. If it does, shorten the tippet a few inches and try it again. Different size flies will also produce different results.
